Is It Forgotten?

They say if you want loyalty,
get a dog.
But why should that be?
Is it a value of old to expect?
For then I am old.
Does the world of today
breed disloyalty,
or simply indifference?
I find it sad all the same,
that words and bonds
are like ink on paper
run through the wash.
They fade simply,
when offers are better,
or the wind changes
with desires.
Or when conflict
is too challenging to address,
and the ghost is easier to face.
May there come a day
when times of loyalty return
for humans, and not only
their four-legged friends.
