Left Behind in a Time Capsule

Fingers rake through nut-brown earth
Burying memories and youthful grief
Of the boy who didn’t love me
Of the kids who tormented me
The strategy of covering up the pain
Didn’t lessen it nor make it disappear
The anguish and stress run in my veins
Seeping from my pores and my eyes
Droplets carrying signs of my ache
Watering the ground that I have covered
Only to remember how far I will go
Leave this version to die in the soil
For I am not what you tell me I am
I am not what you have decided me to be
I am love
I am light
I am strength
I am beauty
I am what I chose
