Please Let Me Go

This poem was inspired by a headline I saw regarding an assisted suicide pod becoming legal. I watched my mother ravaged by cancer many years ago and I wrote this from what I think might have been her perspective. If she could not be cured, which she couldn’t be by the time they found it, then she would rather have peacefully fallen asleep. She did however hold on as long as she could wanting to see her grandchild born, but in the end it was too much.

Release me from this mortal coil
I’ve suffered long enough
Show me the loving compassion
That you would your most adored pet
Release me
To the next stage of my soul
I beg of you show me kindness
Consider me and not yourself
I know it hurts
The emptiness that will remain
For I’ve felt it all before
Release me from this body
Filled with excruciating crimson pain
It has served the vehicle of my spirit
Taken me through this life unfold
Release me
From the needles of my current existence
Numbing me to a zombie stupor
For this is not life nor living
And I am tired now of this fight
I wish to go
But they’d certify me incompetent
To decide upon my fate in this state
Who better than I
To know the will to continue or to quit
My ability to tolerate the indignities

I do fear the repercussions of my request
Afraid to see old faces passed before
Bad blood left standing at the time of their death
I do have to wonder of my wishes…
Would this early release
Disturb the vibration of the Universe
Would this act of empathy
Cause a scar on myself or any who assist
Would patience and prayer
Be rewarded with respite
What lesson lies here
In these languished days
Does my soul require them
To move forth from this plain
Must I wait
Or can I please, please go
To my peaceful resting place

  1. A difficult subject to write about. You capture some of the turmoil well. We have M.A.I.D. (Medical Assistance in Dying) here in Canada. It is a mixed blessing for sure.

    1. Thank you. Yes, a very difficult subject to write about and something hard to watch as well. I had no idea that things like M.A.I.D existed in the world. Interesting to know. Have a great day.
