From Broken Bottles

The ungainly wobble of the bar-soaked parent
Creates a shadow in the doorway of hope
Customary celebration of achievement
Or a season or a joyous occasion
No longer the reason for the daily imbibe
Painkiller from the world or pick-me-up
The earth only looks better at a tilt
The tremors of too many hours without
The off switch to overwhelm sought
And life slowly dwindles down the drain
With each further dive into the bottle
The example set

To follow or rebel against
Rooting for the latter to win out
Addiction to be proven nonhereditary
The scent of rum to dissipate
With the last generation
New skin to form over broken glass scars
And drunken memories to fade
