To youth I go with haste
Return to a better place
To pin the tail on the donkey
Play games like hide-and-seek
Care-free and wonderful
Full of joy and possibility
Before they pinned adult onto me
Expected so much more
They loaded me with responsibility
And I allowed to lose the freedom
Stepped into the shoes waiting for me
Decided to follow the rules of school
To continue to conform
Be a good little citizen and all
I did not break the box
Or venture way outside the lines
But in old age I am wishing
That I had gone just a little bit astray
Tried one or two things more than I had
Adventured every now and then
And asked myself what it is that I wanted
Instead of pleasing all the others
Who were of the decided opinion
That mine was a life for them to decide
If I had it to do over again
Would I do it different?
Perhaps…
But I doubt it
Because I would not have had
The life that I have lived
Had I done a single thing
Unlike this life that I have experienced
So I’ll make the changes
In the next one that I live
