Leaving Scars

When we look at ourselves
For success with judgement and labels
Beneath the skin we crawl
To exam the flaws and failures
Pick at scabs and create new wounds
Of criticism and high expectations
Undefined yet unmet
The bar beyond the measure of others
We broil and stew in loathing
For the large and the small
Missed goals that we never knew
And the ones that were set
Waste time lashing the belt
Repeatedly upon our own scarred flesh
With none to show
But more melancholy and disdain
For more hours squandered
And still no accomplishment
Nervous to ask consent of others
We hold no such consideration
When dealing with ourselves
And proceed to beat and abuse
The fragile view of ourselves
Further to the wretched pile
Of unworthy and insufficient
More labels
More revolt
And less love
