Let Books Be Your Poison

Lick the page
And leave a droplet of your soul on it
Like lightning you’ll be forgotten
For the next taste of adventure, love and drama
The issue of your impermanence
Is the need for escapism
From an unforgiving world of reality
But the method of flight should be calculated
For substance can linger in the vein long
But books loiter in the reader’s heart
They do not obliterate the senses
But heighten to a state of ecstasy and dream
Dalliance with fictional lovers and fighters
Heroes and villains alike
Saved from the bottom of the bottle
Sniff the page
And take food with you to feed your soul
Dry your tears sprung from imaginings
Release another story
To transport them to great highs
And remind them once again

  1. I love this. I have memories entwined in so many books I’ve read. I’ll see or do things and have a De-ja-vu and then remember I didn’t do it a character in a book I read did. The power of books perfectly captured in a wonderful poem. Well done, Debbie.
