Trusting the Selfish

Did you find my heart out on the street?
Bruised and perhaps trampled a bit?
For I tossed it out as it betrayed me again
Allowed the intrusion of soulless guile
In search of benefits only of their own
I’ve become an easy target of these fine foe
Because of its welcoming golden softness
Trusting too naïve to survive the world
I’m going to teach it healthy scepticism
To build gates of authenticity checks
That I might protect it from the selfish
For it to find the fountain of joy for itself
And not be so ready to do the bidding of others
That they might leave with happiness intact
And I to pick up the pieces once more
How sad that this is the world we live for
To not be allowed our childish faith
In all of the human race
