Giving It Back

Accept this gift with my gratitude
I packed it carefully for you
All the insecurities you’ve given me
Fears of abandonment you left me with
I folded each broken promise tenderly
Tucked whispered secrets I now know
Between the shards of honesty
I might have dropped a tear or two
To stain these many memories
That I have held onto
I send you many thanks for these
I have examined each in delicate detail
To gain the growth that I need
And now I no longer need them
I release my grasp and return them
There is no rivalry
To the heartache that you’ve given me
And once upon a time
I handled it very poorly
But now I know to appreciate the blessings
That come in packages of agony
For they are helpful beyond measure
When their treasures are sought
In amongst the seeming chaos
