My Heart Doesn’t Care

Squeezed
Hands rung tight
Now a bone-dry sponge
Lungs with no air
Begin to crack
Like inhospitable soil
Their life stolen
Breath withheld
Waiting

Waiting for your return

But you are gone
Gone forever
Never to be back
Filling this space
Between my bereft arms
Our simpatico ease
Understanding eyes
Mine shut now
Trying to hold the pain
From flooding them
For I cannot believe
Here yesterday
And gone
Gone today
I try to grasp the rational
Your time with me was done
This is the way it works
But my heart doesn’t care
It cries unfair
