Fool Me Twice

Your Friday prompt for Stream of Consciousness Saturday is “notice.” Use it any way you’d like. Enjoy!

Natalie walked up the steps towards the front door and was greeted by a white sheet of paper stuck to it with big red letters glaring at her.

How could this be? Why were they being evicted? The landlord couldn’t kick them out when they were fully paid up. She had given her husband the money to pay the rent. She carefully removed the letter, making sure not to peel the paint with it. Scanning the bad-news-bearer she picked up “breach of contract”, “3 months in arrears on rental payment” and “1 month to vacate the premises or pay the outstanding amount in full.”

She lifted her head and stared out at the wheat fields over the road from her porch. Everything was golden and her mind became clear. It was no longer her porch, because Andrew hadn’t paid the bills. His five-day absence had nothing to do with work and she wondered if he’d be back. The secretive phone calls and missing hours in the days and nights before he left. The crumpled slips she removed from his pants when doing laundry. She trusted him and didn’t think to check where they were from. Had he disappeared to protect her this time or himself again, or maybe they had caught him. Gambler fool me once shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me.
