Your Friday prompt for Stream of Consciousness Saturday is “-ic or -ical.” Find a word that uses the suffix “-ic” or “-ical.” Bonus points if you use both. Have fun!

Volcanic!!! The explosion that devastates anything in its path. The same one that occurs to me when I go ballistic on my children for one infringement or another. Oh but the guilt that riddles me afterwards, making me promise to myself that I will never do that again. I have learned though that children need to have discipline in their lives and mine don’t hate me forever, just a little while – especially the teenager. My eruption is not as beautiful as the lava spewing one, but also thankfully not as devastating. I think trying to provide guidance is a display of love and none of us parents got a manual with our children, so we make mistakes and as long as we are constantly trying to do our best, then we are doing well. I write this poem in this vein:

Your lack of obedience
Has me boiling in the gut
Taught to toe the line and follow the rules
My volcanic lava ready to overflow
At the incomprehension of your testing behaviour
But as the years have passed
As I’ve watched you grow
I too have received most valuable lessons
You are my teacher and not just I yours
The exploration of your boundaries
Not in malice but magical discovery
A new generation, bringing different ways
Breaking the moulds, destroying the box
Educators of more ways than one
I am still trying to let you run free
Learn from you and guide you more gently
Tempering the volcano inside me
Being lit up rather with pride
For the path that you blaze forward
In this big wide world

  1. Volcanic is a great choice! I think we’ve all gone volcanic on our kids once in a while…try not to let the guilt be unreasonably large for the outburst. We’re human and doing the best we can!
