Be gentle if you must

Tread lightly when you choose to be sincere,
Forthright and honest with another.
Though what you say is of the truth
Where feelings are involved, matters of opinion
And differing perspectives abundantly abound,
You run the risk of breaking friendships
And possibly creating enemies.
I do not advocate dishonesty nor deceit of any kind
But perhaps the words of my mother are pertinent
In delicate circumstances of possible misinterpretation
She always used to say that if you cannot say something nice
Don’t say anything at all.
Silence might rather be the way to save a tear or two,
But if you feel you must, then try be gentle
With the parting of a painful truth.
