The Act of Promises

You’ve piled them high,
Promise upon promise
Intended to win favour.
To get you the part
Of acting as ruler,
Of being the chief.
But once in occupation
You fill your pockets
And that of your kin.
The vows to the people
Forgotten in the dust
In which they dwell.
A house only built
For of a few in need
Just before the next act.
